Just to Dream a Dream With You

Billy Bragg & Wilco
"California Stars"
Listen | Buy

NOTES: Oh, just because.

I'd like to rest my heavy head tonight
On a bed of California stars
I'd like to lay my weary bones tonight
On a bed of California stars

I'd love to feel
Your hand touching mine
And tell me why
I must keep working on
Yes I'd give my life
To lay my head tonight
On a bed of California stars

I'd like to dream
My troubles all away
On a bed of California stars
Jump up from my starbed
Make another day
Underneath my California stars

They hang like grapes
On vines that shine
And warm the lovers' glass
Like friendly wine
So I'd give this world
Just to dream a dream with you
On our bed of California stars

It was a perfect weekend summer day about 4 or 5 years ago? when the local brewery started playing this disc. They'd play it all the way through just once, and then it'd be put away for the rest of the week (sometimes bartenders have weird superstitions).

For whatever reason, I serendipitously managed to be hanging out on the patio of said brewery for 5 consecutive weekends at just the right time this disc was played (hey, 18 holes of disc golf makes you thirsty!). I finally went to the local record shop around the corner and sang this song to the owner, since I had no idea it was BB & Wilco. He handed me the disc, took my money, and Adam Smith smiled upon us.

To this day, I have always been in love with this song. The fact that it's Woody Guthrie's words is just big fat icing on the cake....

Great choice. Both Mermaid Avenue discs are great. Tweedy does include this song in Wilco's live shows. I am thinking of going to Farm Aid just to see Wilco again.
